Luau and Legends of Surfing Invitational is a fundraiser like no other. No fancy details, just surfing to find a cure for cancer. Read on to learn more about the event that has brought in nearly $10 million for cancer research over 29 years.
The Start of the Surf
On August 20th, there is the Luau and Legends Sponsor Party at the Scripps Seaside Forum at Scripps Institution of Oceanography to kick off the party. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is part of the UC San Diego campus. They have been understanding the planet since 1903 and have been helping put on the event since it began. They combine education, an aquarium, and even have the newest oceanographic research vessel in America. In fact, all proceeds benefit Moores Cancer Center at UCSD Health. Moores Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the San Diego area. NCI centers are important because studies show that outcomes are better there. Their unique “bench-to-bedside” technique for cancer research is comprehensive and includes genetic studies and advanced treatment.
The Luau
Then, on August 21st, at the beach near Scripps Pier, people from all walks of life will come together. Surfers, scientists and survivors, oh my! Starting early at 7am, this all day event has even showcased some surfing legends, including Jericho Poppler, Corky Carroll and Paul Strauch. And, in honoring another one of these legends, Rell Sunn. Rell Sunn was known as the “First Lady of Surfing” and was given months to live after her breast cancer diagnosis. Instead, she lived to the fullest every day for 15 years until she passed away in 1998. Therefore, the Rell Sunn Award has been given since 1998 to the person who has made a difference in the battle against cancer and embodies the aloha spirit, just like Rell.
